Education and Children’s Services Scrutiny Committee

August 19th, 2014

I was elected Chair of the hard working and dedicated Education and Children’s Services Scrutiny Committee at the June 2014 Council Assembly.

New Facebook Page

I have set up a Facebook page for the Education and Children’s Services Scrutiny Committee. I hope it will make the Committee’s thinking and subsequent reviews as transparent and engaging as possible. It should also help the Council lead the way in combining scrutiny with social media.

Please like this page from your Facebook profile by clicking this link http://tiny.cc/o6r9jx and invite all of your friends and contacts to also like.

Work programme for the next 12 months.

On 2 July 2014 the new committee met and agreed our priorities for the next 12 months.

Our overall objectives are twofold:

– raise attainment levels for the most disadvantaged pupils.
– help safeguard children and young people in the borough

Thirty per cent of children in the borough are not getting 5 good GCSEs at A to C. That is troubling.

So our first inquiry is about how schools will improve that and ‘guarantee education, employment or training for every school leaver in Southwark’.

We want to look at the persistently underperforming groups and positively impact on the education of children in care.

The inquiry is an opportunity for Southwark to work with local schools (regardless of who runs them) and improve children’s lives and the future of our community.

The second inquiry is about the sexual exploitation of children and young people today and how we can stop it.

Our scrutiny spotlight will look at

a) Forced marriages
b) Trafficking
c) Female Genital Mutilation
d) And relationship violence

We will have smaller inquiries but equally as serious on services for children with autism and on the adoption process.
